The room

A plain room, and a kitchen that is not

Chef Rasa Sayang cooks Malaysian food at 25 Mokoia Road, Birkenhead. The dining room is small and unfussy — everything goes into the kitchen instead. Portions are large enough that people leave carrying the rest of it, most mains sit under NZ$20, and diners who come across the bridge for it say so in their reviews.

“A warm and humble spot in the heart of Birkenhead. The interior could do with a little bit of an update though, to keep up with the current trends. Their menu covers all the essential dishes one must try when looking for a traditional Malaysian culinary experience. The beef rendang was something I’ve been raved to about many times prior to my visit. Upon smelling the dish, I found that the gravy was aromatic and reminiscent of what I would have back home. However, in terms of taste, I found that the gravy was tad bit on the saltier side, and the beef itself could be more tender. So I’ll say that this dish is on the fence on whether or not it lived up to the hype. The butter prawn however, is definitely not raved about enough. It was served with a generous amount of beautifully deep fried prawns. And the buttery flakes made every bite satisfying. The addition of some Birds Eye chilli and curry leaves gave the dish an additional kick of flavour. I highly recommend everyone to try this at least once. We had to get our greens in, so we opted for the sambal kangkung (water spinach) to balance everything off. No matter what Malaysian restaurant you’re at, this dish never fails. It is quite a greasy dish because of the sambal, but a little extra flavourful grease in your system once in a while isn’t going to hurt. Overall it was a good first experience, and I can definitely see why this spot is loved so much by the north shore locals.”
